Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was Conservative prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. Born Margaret Roberts in Lincolnshire in 1925, she was a grocer’s daughter who worked as a research chemist before entering politics. Her premiership was notable for her introduction of radical market-led economic reforms, privatisation of state enterprises and confrontation with trade unions. A speech she delivered in 1976 condemning communism earned her the nickname “Iron Lady” in the press. She died in 2013 and remains a divisive political figure in Britain today.
